Djupavic, Iceland
A lot of my pics in Iceland are of abandoned places. There are so many. It makes sense in a place with so much history and so few people. There is room enough to just move over a little as technology and requirements change. Besides, on an island, where would you put the rubble of demolition?
There’s something bittersweet in these places. They represent so much of peoples' past: energy, money, time, cursing and love. And like the button is famous to the buttonhole*, they were worn by use.
But that was a long time ago.
I don’t take pics of graveyards. But an abandoned herring fishery somewhat adjacent and fair game.

ReplyDeleteWeather (wind) sure seems incredibly volatile up there these weeks: one low after the other, slow-moving at times and deep and big!
I love coincidences. By chance, when I watched the excellent video clip of Nick taking on the Arctic Terns, just six hours before I had read in one of Bill Tilman's books about the Antarctic terns dive-bombing him on landing at Sth Shetlands Islands. Terns might just like taking their frustrations out on the skipper...
